You know you can't cheat Death...

Cheating Death

Whipcord muscles made for a quick reaction as she stood up and whipped around, putting distance between them. Brown eyes looked him up and down quickly, piecing together exactly who and what he was. “Death.”

Teeth ground together. She should have known this day would come— she’d escaped Death far too many times in her lifetime for it to continue. Rayne had never expected him to come for her himself.

Death simply blinked as she moved quickly, not really acknowledging her words for the moment, but she knew why he was there, the horseman figure why not enjoy the little visit to the fullest extent?

“Rayne.” He responded after taking in his surroundings. The Pale Rider tapped his equally pale ring atop the cane that he had in hand, dark brooding eyes locked onto the female’s face.

“You seem a bit, on edge.” Death spoke, bland tone and a rather un-amused look upon his features.

Cheating Death

Rayne flopped onto her couch with a beer in hand. That poltergeist case left her battered and bruised, but at least she was alive. Her back protested at the sudden movement, but she ignored it.

Putting the glass bottle down, she carefully pulled off her leather jacket. A sigh passed her lips at the pieces of glass embedded in her shoulder. “Of course.”

Getting up, she gathered everything she needed from the bathroom and then  grabbed a bowl from the kitchen. She moved the strap of her tank top and bra, and began picking the shards out.

The room began to get chilly, darkness seemed to close in around the small building, it was like a huge cloud was passing in front of the sun. This was unusual, nothing like this had ever happened before and the fact that this was all occurring after a mission was all the more strange.

“You know, you may just be on the top of my list, Rayne.” The cold dark and emotionless voice came from behind her, the face of someone far too familiar practically stone as he looked upon her.

“We might have to fix that. Won’t we?”

“Humanity,” she sighed, “It’s beyond the point of pity. Nor do I.”

She paused, lips at the rim of her cup, one last sip to spare, set it back down and folded her hands, damaged things that clicked in the joints of her bones, “They’re lovely, aren’t they? Box jellies. They enjoy the currents, the warm waters. Exotic corals. Enough to admire.”

“I find that you are slowly getting on a better side of me, ‘Ms. Wong’.” Death addressed her by her alias, considering she wouldn’t accept anything else with open arms. “I suppose so, I have never been one to take a closer look at Life’s creations.” The horseman took another sip before setting the glass down gently, and leaning back into the chair he fsound himself easily comfortable in.

“They’ve started calling me your Advocate. Dramatic, isn’t it?”

She poured another glass for herself, “Suppose I should make nice,” she cooed, watched the little creatures float without a care in the world, “There’s beauty in some of it- it’s simply…. impossible to find.”

“Very.” Death responded, eyes only locked on the sea life she had encased so beautifully and carefully. “Impossible doesn’t begin to cover it, Ms. Wong.” The horseman replied, tapping the metal of his pale stoned ring along the arm of the chair he sat in.

The natural hazel of her eyes took back over as she settle from her panic. “I see..” She gave him a small smile. Not exactly fearing the sound of ring meeting cane this time. “I will, he deserves it. He’s my knight in shining tactical gear after all!” The brunette laughed quietly at herself. It was true though, the man was her everything. “I’ll.. just take that as a compliment. You’re not such a bad guy after all huh..”

“I am only kind and somewhat nice to those I like.” Death nodded in response, “Those who I like, happen to be the ones who can escape my Reapers with ease.” The Horseman looked the girl in the eyes, and sighed a bit. “You happen to be one of those people. Be grateful for that, most others I speak to don’t last long.”
